Übersicht
Die Geschichte beginnt mit dem beliebten Online-Spiel Yggdrasil, das eines Tages im Jahr 2138 abgeschaltet werden soll. Momonga, der Protagonist, will sich jedoch nicht ausloggen. Daraufhin wird Momonga in einen mächtigen Skelett-Magier verwandelt. Die Welt von Yggdrasil verändert sich daraufhin, sodass NPCs plötzlich Emotionen und ein eigenes Bewusstsein bekommen.
Ohne Eltern, Freunde oder einen Platz in der Gesellschaft versucht dieser junge Mann, die neue Welt zu erobern, die aus dem Spiel Yggdrasil entstanden ist.

E-Rantel, die Hauptstadt des neugegründeten Hexen-Königreichs, leidet unter Warenmangel, da die Bevölkerung ihren Herrscher Ainz Ooal Gown fürchtet. Um die Lage zu stabilisieren, entsendet Ainz Albedo als Diplomatin. Parallel dazu plant die Slane-Theokratie die Vernichtung von Ainz’ Reich als Vergeltung für die Zerschlagung der Armee von Re-Estize. Ihr Ziel: Das Baharuth-Imperium soll das Hexen-Königreich stürzen. Kaiser Jircniv trifft sich heimlich mit den Gesandten der Theokratie im Kolosseum, doch der Plan scheitert spektakulär: Ainz taucht persönlich auf und entlarvt das Treffen.
